Oil painting course, old master techniques is designed to introduce each of the key steps in the painting process with comprehensive one-to-one tuition.

We use high quality Old Holland oil colours in our painting classes.

INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTING & PORTRAITURE (GRISAILLE METHOD)

Beginning with the drawing stage through to the final glazes all stages of painting process will be discussed and practiced. Instructor will individually assist each student as they progress on their study. The emphasis is on the creation of a solid, three-dimensional illusion.

GRISAILLE

Grisaille method is the most systematic approach to painting whether it be a still life, portrait or landscape. It is a term used for a monochrome painting using shades of grey.

It may be painted for its own sake or used as under-painting.

We are using this technique to introduce students to the art of mixing paint beginning with two pigments (black and white) before moving on to the complexities of colour.

EXERCISE

By using Plane Head (study of the planes making up the human face and used for learning facial structure as a preparation for portrait classes) students will carefully paint the planes, observing edges and tonal relationships of each plane.

Than they will paint the model head using a monochrome pallet paying careful attention to the tonal relationships and fine edges with focus on the creation of a solid, three-dimensional illusion.

OUTCOME

Goal of this master class is that students learn:

the subtleties of tonal relationships
edge manipulation
structure of the face
creation of a three-dimensional illusion

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation of a master class or course up to 2 weeks before it takes place will be refunded in full.

Cancellation made at least 10 days before the master class or course starts will be refunded at 50% of the fee paid.

There is no refund for cancellations made from 10 days before the master class/course begins

We charge lessons with cancellation less than 24 hours before lesson begins

If we cancel a class we will either rearrange the class if possible or refund it in full

1. Where are we?

May Art Studio is an oasis of tranquillity, conveniently located in Vienna’s 6th District only a few minutes walk from Mariahilferstrasse.

In an inspiring fine art studio, surrounded by beautiful works of art, students will be able to connect with the artist within themselves.

2. When?

Lessons are scheduled upon arrangement from Monday to Sunday during the school year.

3. What does it mean “individually structured”?

During the course the instructor dedicates himself to each and every student and adjusts to everyones individual tempo. You share the room with other students but each student works on an individual program.

4. For whom is the course suitable?

For English, German and Croatian speakers.

For beginners and advanced.

5. What happens if the student misses scheduled lesson?

We provide makeup lesson for students who inform us about not coming in advance (minimum 24 hours before the scheduled lesson).

Makeup lessons cannot be organised within your regular time slot (if your regular schedule is on Mondays we will offer you another day during the current or next week when you can have missed lesson).

It is recommended that you inform us about not coming as soon as you know your schedule has changed.

6. When can I start with a course?

START ANYTIME OPTION gives you the possibility to start with a course at any point in the school year. The courses are individually structured.

Classical Drawing Course

Classical drawing course – foundation level purpose is to develop and enhance hand-eye coordination abilities of the participants through traditional education and exercising by using The Bargue Methode.

It is the fastest possible way of learning how to draw on high level.

Advanced drawing course combines The Bargue Method, observational drawing lessons and basics of linear perspective.
