Art workshops for children at May Fine Art Studio are based on Montessori principles of education in combination with classical drawing practices. Creativity, individuality, abilities and self-confidence of children are encouraged through artistic and pedagogical accompaniment and support.

We learn basic drawing skills or improve existing knowledge using topics in accordance with child’s interests.

Students can choose from several art workshops:

  1. Drawing is a Skill For Life (7-14)

This may come as a surprise, but drawing is not really a “talent” as many people believe it to be. Drawing is a learned skill… just like handwriting.

This art workshop is an introduction to drawing techniques. The first steps in the drawing process are: refining of (visual) perception and sharpening of the observation abilities (“learning to see”) as well as learning basic drawing skills and ground elements.

Topic examples: animals, cars, ships, figures, princesses, chibi, anime, etc.

2. Sometimes We Look But We Don’t See (7-14)

Observational drawing is an ideal way to break through habitual ways of thinking. All too often students look but they do not see.

It assists students to see through their habitual ways of seeing and to develop new awareness. Such drawing develops qualities of perception and understanding of whatever is drawn.

Topic examples: every day household items, small hand tools, brushes, apples, crumpled paper, textured objects, etc.

3. Fashion Makes Me Happy (7-14)

This course will help students explore drawing styles and techniques in the context of fashion. It will teach them how to draw fashion figures, body elements, movement, posture and fashion poses with garments.

4. How Does Linear Perspective Work? (7-14)

Perspective is the basic and most fundamental knowledge for sketching. This workshop is designed to enhance student’s knowledge of one and two point perspective.

5. Young Artists (7-12)

We will travel through time as we explore some of art history’s most fascinating artists and paintings with a goal to create our own masterpiece inspired by their work.

Topic examples: E. Munch, V. van Gogh, H. Matisse, V. Kandinsky, S. Dali, etc.

6. Chibi Kawaii Portraits (7-12)

Working from a selected Chibi portrait template we will learn basic drawing skills and ground elements. The goal of the workshop is to develop drawing abilities of the participants. At the same time the individual strength and artistic interpretation of each student are encouraged.

4. Meaning of Montessori principles of education we follow

Montessori education assists the child’s natural development into a complete human being comfortable with himself/herself, hers/his society and humanity as a whole.

A prepared environment at MFAS provides a secure and permanent foundation on which artistic education should be based. It is specific to each developmental plane but guided by the same principles.

Within our society we are in constant interaction with people who are older or younger. Since  children need different environments at different stages in their development, art classes at MFAS are age mixed. That way the young child is surrounded by role models. Similarly, the older child finds himself/herself in a position of responsibility which leads toward cooperation within group.

Each child is given freedom of choice and freedom of time which allow the child the freedom to respond to the teacher within her/him.

When children are allowed freedom in an environment suited to their needs, engaged into activities of their own choice they grow inner discipline and develop their own will.

5. Use of classical drawing practices

At MFAS we use classical drawing practices as a tool for hand-eye coordination enhancement which directly leads toward improvement of cognitive skills (perception, attention, focus enhancement, memory stimulation, visual processing, executive functions), self-confidence boost and creative development.
